After breaking through at Derby County at the age of just 16, it was discovered that O'Brien had a life-threatening heart condition which required surgery and he battled back to play, later writing his name into Newport folklore with a last gasp goal to save the club from relegation from the Football League and captaining the side in a memorable F.A.
